Anders (b.1968), Landskrona, Sweden, is a conceptual artist whose practice operates at the intersection of video, sound, new media, and temporary installations. For over 25 years, his work has been primarily concerned with identity—how it is formally constructed, remembered, and inevitably dissolved.
By utilizing and subverting new technologies, he explores the volatile space where personal experiences coexist with digital structures, mapping out themes of memory, ideology, and loss. Specializing in digital media, his work challenges the permanence of the digital age by treating technology not as a tool for preservation, but as a medium for disappearance.
In 2006, he coined the term Peer-to-peer art (P2P art), a radical conceptual framework that repositioned digital file-sharing networks as ephemeral art galleries. Art made for—and only available on—the peer-to-peer networks.
In this ecosystem, the original artwork is shared by the artist until one other user has downloaded it. Once a single copy exists in the network, the file remains available only as long as the community continues to share it. The original file and all materials used to create it are immediately and permanently destroyed by the artist. “There’s no original.”
Through this methodology, six films with runtimes between 45 minutes and 9 hours were released into the digital ether in a single copy, leaving their survival entirely dependent on the collective network. P2P Art—the aesthetics of ephemerality.
In 2009, his exploration of digital space manifested in URL Art with the project theurlistheartwork.com. Operating as a sublime critique of internet infrastructure, the work consisted solely of the domain name itself and a stark text declaring: “The url is The artwork.” By stripping away all content, Weberg repositioned the mandatory digital address as the primary aesthetic object, pioneering a form of web-based minimalism where the medium and the location became entirely indistinguishable.
This philosophy reached its definitive peak with Ambiancé (2006–2020), a monumental 720-hour (30 days) experimental film that stands as a historic exploration of time, space, and digital impermanence.
In 2014, the film’s 72-minute teaser achieved the official Guinness World Record as the longest movie trailer ever released. Weberg subsequently eclipsed and extended his own record in 2016 with the release of a staggering 7-hour and 20-minute trailer.
The final 43,200-minute cinematic piece was screened globally just once in December 2020. True to the core of his practice, the film and every trace of its source material were completely erased by the artist immediately following its conclusion.
By deleting the longest film in cinema history, Weberg turned a massive digital archive into a phantom work, existing now only as a conceptual memory. To definitively close the chapter on his relationship with the moving image, all physical media containing raw footage, archives, and finished videos from his entire catalog—comprising over 300 video works and 150 music videos—were also systematically and permanently destroyed.
He is also the founder and curator of the Stian [con]temporary art gallery and AIVA (Ängelholm International Video Art Festival) 2012/2014.
Currently based in the traditional landscape of Kölleröd in the south of Sweden, his ephemeral and time-based works have been exhibited internationally at numerous art and film festivals, galleries, and museums, including:
Museum of Modern Art 2011, Buenos Aires, Argentina; File Brazil 2007-2012, São Paulo, Brazil; FutureEverything 2010, Manchester, UK; National Museum of Contemporary Art 2010, Athens, Greece; Beijing Contemporary Art Centre 2010, Beijing, China; Cape 09 Art Biennale, Cape Town, South Africa; Biennale of Sydney 2008, Sydney, Australia; [10th] Japan Media Arts Festival, Tokyo, Japan; SONAR, Barcelona, Spain; Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; and EMAF, European Media Art Festival, Osnabrück, Germany.
